Punjab and Haryana High Court
After partition of India, the High Court at Lahore ceased to have jurisdiction over Delhi and East Punjab. The East Punjab High Court, which was the successor and continuation of the High Court at Lahore, was established at Shimla on August 15, 1947. The decisions of Lahore High Court were binding on the Punjab High Court on the principle of stare decisis. After the Constitution came into force, East Punjab was renamed as Punjab and the name of the High Court was also changed. The seat of the High Court was shifted from Shimla to Chandigarh in January, 1955. The present building was designed by the famous French Architect, 'Le Corbusier' and opened in March, 1955.
The sanctioned strength of Judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court is 64 permanent and 21 additional Judges.
