The Supreme Court Bar Association has passed a resolution expressing its grave concern and condemning the reported use of excessive force against and detention of senior and young advocates, particularly women advocates, who were peacefully protesting in the Supreme Court area today against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The association has requested the Chief Justice of India to intervene in the matter.

The Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) has also written a similar appeal.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court directed the concerned authorities to reconsider the complete prohibition on Metro services and train movements in New Delhi ahead of the October 10 protests.

The Resolution said, "The Supreme Court Bar Association resolves to request the Hon'ble Chief Justice of India to intervene urgently and take up the matter with the concerned authorities so that the whereabouts and safety of every detained advocate are ascertained, they are given access to legal assistance, and those against whom there are no lawful grounds for detention are released immediately."

It was also requested that the circumstances of the detentions and the reported use of force be examined, and appropriate action be taken in accordance with law.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal mentioned the plea against the blanket administrative crackdown, arguing that it severely infringed upon citizens' fundamental rights to movement and peaceful assembly under the Constitution.

Consequently, as per reports, the Chief Justice has now intervened in the matter and spoken to the authorities.
