The Supreme Court issued notice on a writ petition filed by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders challenging alleged large-scale voter deletions and irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The Court questioned the conduct of the petitioners regarding a recent march by opposition leaders and a mob into the Supreme Court premises and filing a counter, stating that the entertainment of the petition for certain petitioners remains provisional and subject to an explanation of their conduct.

The Court also issued notice in a writ petition concerning the gathering of a mob and the incidents that occurred within the Supreme Court premises during a march by opposition leaders.
On October 12, 2026, various leaders including LoP Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, RJD's Tejashwi Yadav, and other opposition figures marched towards the Supreme Court and entered the filing counter, reportedly to file a petition.

The Bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi ordered, "Before that, we would like to ask the petitioners about his conduct on the next date of hearing and issuing notice does not mean that we are condoning anything. This we are issuing about one of the petitioners. The entertainment on behalf of one of the petitioners is on a provisional basis, subject to his explaining the conduct...whosoever accepts notice, accept notice, otherwise dasti."

Senior Advocates Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi appeared for Gandhi.

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant had turned down a request by Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi for an administrative meeting to submit a memorandum on issues including the Election Commission, student arrests, and transit disruptions, stating that doing so would violate the constitutional principle of separation of powers.

A petition was also filed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and others over alleged large-scale voter deletions and irregularities in the SIR of electoral rolls. The Court issued notice in the petition filed by him.

Around 200 lawyers have also filed their representation/letter to the Supreme Court Bar Association seeking a resolution condemning the march to the Supreme Court on October 12, 2026, by Rahul Gandhi and his supporters.

The Supreme Court Bar Association had also passed a resolution expressing its grave concern and condemning the reported use of excessive force against and detention of senior and young advocates, particularly women advocates, who were peacefully protesting in the Supreme Court area today against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The association has requested the Chief Justice of India to intervene in the matter.
