The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has taken cognizance of a distressing incident that reportedly occurred in Sandeshkhali in West Bengal on February 14, 2024 involving violence against a child.

The NCPCR has written a letter to the District Magistrate of North 24-Parganas seeking an Action Taken Report about the incident within 48 hours.

According to news reports, a group of miscreants, accompanied by police officials, attacked the residence of victim’s mother. They forcibly entered her house, vandalized doors and windows, physically assaulted her, and snatched her infant daughter, callously threw her away.

The Commission has invoked its powers under Section 13(1) of the Commissions for Protection of Child Rights Act, 2005.

The notice issued by NCPCR today reads, “ln view of the gravity and sensitivity of the matter, the Commission has taken cognizance of the said news report under Section l3(l) O of CPCR Act,2005. Consequently, it is requested that a prompt and thorough investigation into the incident may be carried out by ensuring the following course of action:

i) Required medical treatment of the victim child and safety and security of the child along with the family

ii) Necessary compensation to the family

iii Proper rehabilitation and re-settlement of the family

iv) Action against the alleged perpetrators as per law”

The Commission has requested an Action Taken Report on these issues, along with relevant documents, to be submitted within 48 hours of the issuance of the notice.

The National Commission Women had issued a statement saying that testimonies of victims indicate widespread fear and systematic abuse (physical and sexual violence) by police officers and members of the Trinamool Congress, at Sandeshkhali.

Today morning, a PIL seeking transfer of investigation into the alleged large-scale violence against women in Sandeshkhali in West Bengal to the CBI or a SIT was mentioned before the Supreme Court.

Earlier in the week, the Calcutta High Court had taken suo moto cognizance of reported occurrences of sexual assaults against women in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas, and illicit transfer of tribal lands.
