After the Kerala High Court issued a notice relaxing dress code for Advocates for this summer season, the Calcutta High Court in light of the ongoing heatwave and discomforting weather conditions forecasted by the Meteorological Department for Kolkata and its surrounding areas for the next five days has issued a directive exempting lawyers from wearing advocates' gowns.

Amidst persistent summer temperatures reaching around 40 degrees Celsius in the city, Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam of the Calcutta High Court has decided to waive the requirement of wearing advocates' gowns until the court reopens after the summer vacation on June 10.

A notification dated April 19, 2024 from the High Court read, “Taking note of the weather, wearing of Advocates’ gown is exempted till the Court reopens after Summer Vacation on 10.06.2024.”

The summer vacation at the Calcutta High Court is scheduled to commence from May 19.
