Justice KT Thomas, former Judge of the Supreme Court, has lauded the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on the eve of its 100th anniversary. Justice Thomas said that RSS is an organisation which stands strongly for our democracy.

Founded on the Vijaya Dashmi of the year 1925, the RSS is celebrating its 100th anniversary on October 2, 2025 (Vijaya Dashmi).

Justice Thomas said that it is not surprising for those who know the RSS that it is completing 100 years of service. Justice Thomas was speaking to the media, conveying his best wishes to the RSS for its events and activities during its centenary year.

Justice Thomas said that RSS is not a political organisation, but a social and cultural organisation.

"The then Prime Minister could not continue with the Emergency because of the work of the RSS", Justice Thomas said.

The former Judge of the Supreme Court said that the aim of the RSS is the progress and prosperity of the nation. He said that RSS gives a social consciousness to the Indian culture. He refuted the allegations that RSS is a communal organisation.

Speaking about the physical activities (shakhas) of the RSS, he said that the RSS trains citizens for self-defence and said, referring to Section 96 of the IPC, that self-defence is recognised under the law.

Justice Thomas said that many people have joined politics from the RSS, referring to the examples of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Prime Minister, late Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He said that their patriotism, discipline and simplicity are virtues they gained from the RSS.

Today, the Prime Minister released a special commemorative postage stamp and a coin to mark the centenary of the RSS. PM Modi said during the event that the specially designed coin and stamp highlight the contribution of the RSS to the nation.

In May, 2025, Justice Thomas had said that Indira Gandhi tried to destroy the democracy of India by imposing the Emergency. "Not only am I not a fan of her, I believe that she tried to destroy the democracy of India. She imprisoned many freedom fighters without trial for eighteen months. Would anyone else do something like that? She became a dictator", he had said.

Justice KT Thomas was a judge of the Supreme Court from March 29, 1996, till January 30, 2002. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government in 2007, for services in the field of social affairs.
