While replying to a question about steps taken by the government to eliminate corruption from Judiciary, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju has said that the issue of checking corruption in the judiciary is to be addressed by the judiciary itself.

"The issue of checking corruption in the judiciary is to be addressed by the judiciary itself, as it is an independent organ under the Indian Constitution.", he said in Lok Sabha.

A Member of Parliament, Malook Nagar had posed the question to the Law Minister in Lok Sabha seeking details of steps taken/being taken by the government to eliminate corruption in the judiciary.

Kiren Rijiju also said that accountability in higher judiciary is maintained through "in-house procedure" as was adopted by the Apex Court in 1997.

"Accountability in higher judiciary is maintained through "in-house procedure" adopted by the Supreme Court in Full Court meeting held on 7th May, 1997." he added.

While explaining the in-house procedure he said "As per the "in-house procedure", Chief Justice of India is competent to receive complaints against the conduct of the Judges of the Supreme Court and the Chief Justices of the High Courts. Similarly, the Chief Justices of the High Courts are competent to receive complaints against the conduct of High Court Judges. Further as per Article 235 of the Constitution of India, the control over district Courts and Courts subordinate thereto vests in the High Court."
