The Ministry of Law and Justice has notified the appointment of Justice Uday Umesh Lalit to be the next Chief Justice of India from August 27, 2022. He will replace the current CJI NV Ramana.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 27th August, 2022.", the notification issued by the Law Ministry read.

This comes after the present Chief Justice of India NV Ramana had recommended the name of the senior-most Judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit to be the next Chief Justice of India.

Born on November 9, 1957, Justice UU Lalit was enrolled as an Advocate in June, 1983. In 2004 he was designated as Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court and was appointed as Judge of the Apex Court on August 13, 2014. Justice Lalit has handled various high-profile cases. Before he was recommended to be appointed as a Supreme Court Judge, Justice Lalit conducted the trial in 2G scam case as the Special Public Prosecutor for the CBI.
