The Dera Sacha Sauda's chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been convicted on the charges of murder by a special CBI Court in Panchkula. The conviction is for the murder of former Dera manager Ranjit Singh. The quantum of punishment would be pronounced on October 12.

Ranjit Singh was shot dead in the year 2002 when he was the Dera manager. The reason behind the killing is said to be the suspicion that he had circulated an anonymous letter that revealed how women were allegedly sexually exploited by the Dera Chief at the Dera headquarters.

As per the chargesheet of the CBI, the Dera Chief believed that Ranjit Singh was hatching a conspiracy to kill him.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court had recently dismissed a petition of Ranjit Singh's son to transfer the case from CBI Court, Panchkula to another CBI Court in Punjab or Haryana.

The CBI Court has convicted the Dera chief along with other 4 accused – Krishan Lal, Jasbir Singh, Avtar Singh, and Sabdil for the offence of murder.

There was one more accused in the case, who passed away last year.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is lodged in Rohtak's Sunaria jail since 2017, where he is currently serving imprisonment of 20 years for raping his two disciples.
