Chief Justice N V Ramana has said that it is necessary for all the citizens of the world to work tirelessly to sustain and further the liberty, freedom and democracy "our forefathers have fought for".

Ramana made the observation after visiting the Independence Hall in Philadelphia, USA.

The CJI said that the monument marks a defining moment in human civilisation and all democracies have been inspired by the values which originated from the sacred place.

"It represents inviolable guarantees and promises definitive of human dignity and existence. Standing in this historic hall, one cannot but be moved by the bravery, spirit and ideals that motivated the founding fathers of the United States of America that continue to resonate even today, across the globe", the CJI said.

"It is necessary for us all, the citizens of the world, to work tirelessly to sustain and further the liberty, freedom and democracy our forefathers have fought for. That is the only tribute worthy of their sacrifices," CJI Ramana added.

In 1776, the Second Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence at Independence Hall.

Although known today as Independence Hall, the building was constructed to be the Pennsylvania State House. It once housed all three branches of Pennsylvania's colonial government.
