SC Collegium Recommends Appointment Of Patna High Court Chief Justice As Supreme Court Judge
The Supreme Court Collegium resolved to recommend the appointment of Justice K Vinod Chandran, currently the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, as a judge of the Supreme Court.
The decision was made by the Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna.
Justice Chandran, originally from the Kerala High Court, was appointed as a judge there on November 8, 2011. He was elevated to the position of Chief Justice of the Patna High Court on March 23, 2023, and has held this role since then.
The Collegium noted Justice Chandran's extensive experience, having served as a High Court judge for over 11 years and as a Chief Justice for more than a year. His diverse expertise in various areas of law was highlighted in the resolution. The Collegium also considered his seniority in the all-India list of High Court judges, where he ranks 13th, and pointed out the absence of representation from the Kerala High Court in the Supreme Court following the recent retirement of Justice CT Ravikumar, also from Kerala High Court.
Justice Chandran, who ranks first in seniority among Kerala High Court judges, was recommended with these factors in mind.
The resolution dated January 07, 2025 read, “The Collegium has, therefore, unanimously recommended that Mr. Justice K. Vinod Chandran be appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.”
