The Supreme Court today issued notice on a plea filed by Actor-Politician S. Ve. Shekar challenging his conviction for making derogatory comments against women journalists on social media.

A Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi issued notice and continued the interim protection from surrender that had been granted to Shekar on April 25, 2025.

During the hearing, Shekar’s counsel submitted, "I cannot contact her, my lord, because it will be seen in a different light. So I reached out to her through friends. She was not committal. I have sent a detailed letter giving an unconditional apology. I am in my lord's hands, my lord. Whatever my lord says, I will do."

On April 25, 2025, the Court came down heavily on Shekar for making derogatory social media posts against women journalists. A Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice N. Kotiswar Singh had remarked, “It’s a nasty campaign you carried out against a woman… attacking her dignity directly, and in such a brazen and abrupt manner.”

The Court took note that Shekar had not impleaded the complainant as a party and expressed concern that he may have harassed other women as well. It had also questioned his claim of having posted a public apology, stating, “No, no, no. You never apologized,” and observed that the apology appeared merely formal.

The Court granted Shekar four weeks to approach the complainant and attempt to persuade her to accept an unconditional apology, clarifying, “Implead her only when you are able to persuade her to accept your apology.” He was exempted from surrendering till the next date of hearing.
