The Supreme Court Bench comprising of Justice L. Nageshwar Rao and Justice B. R. Gavai today dismissed the plea filed by Samajwadi Party leader from Rampur Constituency Azam Khan seeking grant of interim bail to campaign for the upcoming Legislative Assembly Elections.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal who represented Azam Khan before the Court submitted that the 87 FIRs have been filed against him and that he has been granted bail in 84 of them.

He also argued that despite repeated mentioning before the Allahabad High Court, the Court has not heard the matter and is being repeatedly adjourned.

Justice L. Nageshwar Rao while dismissing the matter said, "Don't bring politics in the Court" and asked that the matter be taken back to the High Court.

The Bench while passing the orders asked the High Court to hear the plea filed by Azam Khan expeditiously.

The Samajwadi Party leader has been in Sitapur jail since February of 2020 in various different cases like land grabbing, encroachment, fraud, etc.

It has been alleged by him that the Uttar Pradesh Government had registered the cased so that he could be incarcerated during the period of the Assembly Elections.
