The Ministry of Law and Justice has notified the appointment of Justice Surya Kant as the next Chief Justice of India with effect from 24th November, 2025.

The current CJI Gavai had recommended to the Centre the name of Justice Surya Kant as the next CJI on the October 27, 2025.

The notification dated October 30, 2025, released on the Ministry's website read, "In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 24th November, 2025."
