The Orissa High Court has directed the Director General of Police, Odisha to explore the possibility of registration of e-F.I.R. in the State.

The bench of Justice S.K. Panigrahi observed that the registration of e-F.I.R. especially in cases of crimes against women will go a long way in combating crimes against women.

The Court directed thus "The Director General of Police, Odisha is directed to explore the possibility of registration of e-F.I.R. in the State. The registration of e-F.I.R. especially in cases of crimes against women will go to a long way in combating crimes against women and ensure better women safety and security."

The Court has directed the DGP to file the reply within fifteen days regarding the possibility of having a system of registration of e-F.I.R. in the State.

The Court was dealing with a criminal miscellaneous petition filed by a woman who had approached the Court due to non-registration of the FIR in the complaint filed by her.

Advocate A. K. Mohapatra appeared for the petitioner-complainant whereas Additional Standing Counsel S.N. Das appeared for the State.

The counsel for the State submitted that in the meantime, the complaint filed by the petitioner has already been registered as F.I.R.

Thus the Court noted that the grievance of the petitioner has been redressed.

However, before parting with the Order the Court directed the DGP to explore the possibility of registration of e-F.I.R. in the State to ensure better women's safety and security.

The Court has listed the matter on January 5, 2023, for further hearing.
