The Ministry of Law and Justice notified the transfer of Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Varma back to his parent court, the Allahabad High Court.

This move was based on a recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium on March 24. The Collegium’s decision stemmed from a major controversy that erupted following a fire at Justice Varma’s residence, which allegedly led to the discovery of a substantial amount of cash by firefighters.

Interestingly, the Collegium arrived at this decision after holding two separate meetings—one on March 20 and another on March 24.

The controversy began on the evening of March 14, when a fire broke out at Justice Varma’s home. During firefighting operations, emergency responders reportedly stumbled upon a significant amount of unaccounted cash.

Following these developments, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) initiated an in-house investigation into the allegations on March 21. A three-member committee was formed to conduct the inquiry. Additionally, the Supreme Court released a report from the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on the incident, along with Justice Varma’s response.

Justice Yashwant Varma was born in 1969 and obtained his law degree from Rewa University in Madhya Pradesh. He enrolled as an advocate in 1992 and built a distinguished legal career, serving as special counsel for the Allahabad High Court and as the Chief Standing Counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh.

In 2013, he was designated a Senior Advocate, and the following year, in October 2014, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court. He was later confirmed as a Permanent Judge in February 2017. In October 2021, he was transferred to the Delhi High Court, where he assumed office.

Meanwhile, in another notification the Ministry has also cleared the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation to transfer another Delhi High Court judge, Justice Chandra Dhari Singh, back to the Allahabad High Court.

A formal notification regarding Justice Singh’s transfer was issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice on March 28, 2025..

The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and comprising Justices B.R. Gavai and Surya Kant, had recommended Justice Singh’s repatriation in its meetings held on November 28 and 29, 2024.

Justice Singh completed his law degree from Delhi University in 1993 and enrolled as an advocate the following year. He was an Advocate-on-Record at the Supreme Court and primarily practiced law in Delhi.

He was elevated to the position of Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court in September 2017 and was later confirmed as a Permanent Judge in September 2019.

In another notification dated March 28, 2025 the Ministry has notified the transfer of Justice Arindam Sinha from the Orissa High Court to the Allahabad High Court.

The decision to transfer Justice Sinha was based on a recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium during its meetings held on March 6 and March 20.

Justice Arindam Sinha was born on September 22, 1965. He enrolled as an advocate on March 11, 1991, and practiced law for 22 years, primarily before the Calcutta High Court.

His judicial career began when he was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Calcutta High Court on October 30, 2013. He was later confirmed as a Permanent Judge on March 14, 2016. Subsequently, on October 8, 2021, he was sworn in as a judge of the Orissa High Court.
