The Department Of Justice has recommended the name of Justice Nilay Vipinchandra Anjaria, judge of the Gujarat High Court to be appointed as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.

The Notification, dated February 16 2024 reads, “in exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Nilay Vipinchandra Anjaria, Judge, Gujarat High Court, to be the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, with effect from the date he assumes charge of the office, consequent upon the superannuation of Shri Justice P. S. Dinesh Kumar, present Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court on 24.02.2024”.

Justice N. V. Anjaria, born in Ahmedabad on March 23, 1965, comes from a family of legal professionals. He practised law in the High Court of Gujarat, handling various cases, including constitutional matters, civil disputes, and labour issues. He also served as Standing Counsel for several entities. On November 21, 2011, he was appointed as an Additional Judge and later confirmed as a permanent Judge of the High Court of Gujarat.

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the name of Justice Anjaria on February 7.

Recently, the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the transfer of Justice Anu Sivaraman of the Kerala High Court to Karnataka High Court. Justice Sivaraman is set to become the senior most Puisne Judge of the Karnataka High Court, once the recommendation is acted upon by the Centre. Justice Sivaraman was sworn in as an Additional Judge of the Kerala High Court on April 10, 2015 and was appointed as a permanent Judge of the High Court with effect from April 5, 2017. Justice Sivaraman was born on May 25, 1966.
