The Ministry of Law and Justice notified the appointment of Justice G Narendar, a judge from the Andhra Pradesh High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court.

The appointment was made in accordance with the power granted under clause (1) of Article 217 of the Indian Constitution. The notification states that Justice Guhanathan Narendar, who is currently a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, has been appointed to assume the role of Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court, effective from the date he takes charge of the office.

This appointment follows the recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium on September 24, which had proposed Justice Narendar's name for the prestigious position. Justice Narendar, originally appointed as a judge of the Karnataka High Court on January 2, 2015, was later transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court on October 30, 2023.

Justice Narendar holds the distinction of being the senior-most judge in his original High Court (Karnataka High Court) and is a member of the Other Backward Class. Before his elevation to the bench, he practiced law at the Karnataka High Court, where he garnered significant experience in legal practice. His judicial career is noted for his extensive experience both on the judicial and administrative sides, particularly in the High Courts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The Supreme Court Collegium, in its resolution, highlighted his seasoned approach and expertise in handling both judicial and administrative matters.

The notification dated December 23, 2024 read, “In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Guhanathan Narendar, Judge, Andhra Pradesh High Court, to be Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court, with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”
