The Ministry of Law and Justice notified the appointment of Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.

Initially, in July, the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Justice Sandhawalia, who is currently serving in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, for the position of Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. However, in September 2024, the Collegium revised its earlier recommendations regarding the appointment of Chief Justices to four High Courts, and Justice Sandhawalia's name was instead proposed for the Chief Justice role in Himachal Pradesh. This revised recommendation has now been approved by the Central Government.

Justice Sandhawalia was appointed as an additional judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on September 30, 2011, and was later confirmed as a permanent judge of the same court on January 24, 2014.

The notification dated December 23, 2024 read, “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Gunned Singh Sandhawalia, Judge, P: jab and Haryana High Court, to be the Chief Justice of the Himachal PraLlesh High Court, with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”
