Centre Notifies Appointment Of Chief Justice At Calcutta High Court

The Ministry of Law and Justice has notified the appointment of Justice Sujoy Paul, Judge, Calcutta High Court (PHC: Madhya Pradesh) as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.
The Supreme Court Collegium had made the recommendation in a meeting held on January 09, 2026.
The announcement was made today by the Law Minister Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal on X which read, “In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, the President of India, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sujoy Paul, Judge, Calcutta High Court as Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of the office. I convey my best wishes to him.”
Justice Paul enrolled as an Advocate in the year 1990 in the Bar Council of Madhya Pradesh and actively practiced in Civil, Constitutional, Industrial and Service and other branches of Law and appeared before various Courts. He was elevated as Judge of Madhya Pradesh High Court at Jabalpur on May 27, 2011 and permanent Judge on April 14, 2014. He was transferred to Telangana High Court on March 26, 2024. He was appointed to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice, in Telangana High Court w.e.f. January 21, 2025. Subsequently His Lordship was transferred as the Judge of the Calcutta High Court on July 18, 2025, and was appointed as the Additional Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court on September 26, 2025.
