Centre Notifies Appointment Of Acting Chief Justices For Three High Courts, Additional Judge For Delhi HC

The Ministry of Law and Justice has notified the appointment of three judges to be the Acting Chief Justices of three High Courts after the elevation of their chief justices to the Supreme Court on October 05, 2026.
In separate notifications issued on October 5, the President, in exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, appointed Shri Justice Puthichira Sam Koshy, Judge of the Telangana High Court, as Acting Chief Justice of that High Court.
Justice Koshy will take charge with effect from the date Shri Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh relinquishes the charge of the office of Chief Justice consequent upon his elevation as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.
The President also appointed Shri Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak, Judge of the Gujarat High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court.
Justice Pathak will assume the duties with effect from the date Smt. Justice Sunita Agarwal relinquishes the charge of the office of Chief Justice consequent upon her elevation as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.
In another notification, Shri Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre, Judge of the Delhi High Court, was appointed to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court.
Justice Sambre will take charge with effect from the date Shri Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya relinquishes the charge of the office of Chief Justice consequent upon his elevation as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.
In another notification, Shri Gurvinder Pal Singh, Judicial Officer, was appointed as Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court. The notification released on October 05, 2026 read, "In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 224 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Gurvinder Pal Singh, to be an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office till 25th June, 2028."
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended his name in a meeting held on September 10, 2026.
