"Such behavior must be condemned. Just because you are popular, you cannot take society for granted," remarked Justice Surya Kant.

The Supreme Court today granted interim protection from arrest to YouTuber Ranveer Allahabadia in connection with FIRs registered against him in Mumbai and Assam over remarks made during the show India’s Got Latent.

The Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice NK Singh stayed his arrest on the condition that he would fully cooperate with the investigation without legal representation inside the police station.

The Court also directed that no new FIRs be registered against him based on the show’s content and permitted Allahabadia to seek police protection if he faces threats. The Bench noted that the language used by the petitioner was highly inappropriate and questioned whether he should be granted protection solely due to his popularity.

"Such behavior must be condemned. Just because you are popular, you cannot take society for granted," remarked Justice Surya Kant. He further said, "Is there anyone on earth who will like this language? There is something very dirty in his mind that has been vomited. Why should we protect him?"

The Court further issued the following directions:

1. No fresh FIRs shall be registered against Allahabadia based on the India’s Got Latent show.

2. He may approach local police in Maharashtra and Assam for protection if required.

3. If any new FIR is filed in Jaipur, his arrest will remain stayed.

4. He must deposit his passport with the Thane police.

5. He cannot leave the country without the Supreme Court’s permission.

During the hearing, Advocate Dr. Abhinav Chandrachud, representing Allahabadia, highlighted the death threats against his client, including a Rs. 5 lakh bounty for cutting his tongue. While granting interim protection, the Court emphasized that obscene and offensive language cannot be justified under the guise of free speech.

"So, what you uttered such words for popularity, and now threats are also issued for the same. There were also threats against a sitting CM, and we proceeded; also we knew the threat giver was a poor fellow.... The words you have chosen, parents will feel ashamed. Daughters and sisters will feel ashamed. The entire society will be ashamed. These are the levels of depravity you and your henchmen have gone. The rule of law and system have to be followed," Justice Kant said.

When Chandrachud submitted that people have entered the clinic of this mother posing as patients and threatened her.

To this, Justice Kant said, "He should be ashamed as to what he has done to his parents. We are not in ivory towers, and we know how he copied Australian show content. There are warnings in such shows."

On February 14, the Bench led by CJI Sanjiv Khanna had told Advocate Abhinav Chandrachud, appearing for the influencer, that it does not allow oral mentioning of cases for urgent listing.

“I have assigned the bench, and it will come up (before a bench) in two-three days,” the CJI had said when Chandrachud submitted that the Assam police had summoned Allahbadia for joining the probe during the day.

Podcaster Allahbadia's remarks on parents and sex on comedian Samay Raina's YouTube show 'India's Got Latent' triggered a controversy, and several FIRs have been lodged against him and others in various parts of the country.

An Assam police team is in Pune to issue summons to Raina in connection with a case filed in the northeastern state over his now-deleted YouTube show ‘India's Got Latent.’. Raina has a house in Balewadi in Pune.

A case was registered on Monday in Guwahati by a resident there for alleged promotion of obscenity in a publicly accessible online show. Besides Allahbadia and Raina, others named in the case in Assam are Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh and Apoorva Makhija. Earlier, Allahabadia was asked to remain present at Mumbai's Khar police station by the Mumbai police. The YouTuber is also facing a police complaint in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

The Maharashtra Cyber Department has also registered the case under relevant sections of the IT Act and sought removal of all episodes, totaling 18, of the comedy show.
