21 Out Of 33 Judges Of Supreme Court Make Their Assets Public: Here Are Some Highlights

The Supreme Court of India has declared the assets of some of its sitting judges following a Full Court resolution passed on April 1, 2025.

In a move aimed at enhancing judicial transparency, the Supreme Court of India has made public the personal asset declarations of its sitting judges, following a Full Court resolution passed on April 1, 2025. The resolution mandates judges to file declarations upon assuming office and after acquiring substantial assets, with the statements now published on the official website of the Court.

Among the prominent disclosures is that of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the 51st Chief Justice of India, who is due to retire on May 13, 2025. He was elevated to the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019, after serving as a Judge of the Delhi High Court. Before his judicial appointments, he was Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department and later served as Additional Public Prosecutor in the Delhi High Court.

His declared assets include a three-bedroom DDA flat in South Delhi, a four-bedroom apartment in the Commonwealth Games Village (2446 sq. ft.), a 56% share in a Gurugram apartment (2016 sq. ft.) jointly owned with his daughter, and a share in an ancestral property in Dalhousie, Himachal Pradesh.

Justice B.R. Gavai, who is set to become the next Chief Justice of India on May 14, 2025, joined the Bar in 1985. After initial years working with the former Advocate General Raja S. Bhonsale, he practiced primarily at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court. Elevated to the Bombay High Court in 2003 and made permanent in 2005, Justice Gavai was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019.

Justice Gavai's asset declaration includes a residential house in Amravati (inherited), apartments in Bandra (Mumbai) and Defence Colony (Delhi), and agricultural lands across Maharashtra. Financially, he has declared Rs 21,000 in Nyay Sagar Co-operative Society shares, Rs 2,31,315 in other investments, a Public Provident Fund (PPF) of Rs 6,59,692, and a General Provident Fund (GPF) balance of Rs 2,35,86,736/-.

Justice K.V. Viswanathan was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court on April 28, 2009, and served as Additional Solicitor General of India from August 2013 to May 2014. Having appeared in several Constitution Bench matters and as amicus curiae in significant cases, he has also been a member of NALSA and the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee. Justice Viswanathan was directly elevated to the Supreme Court from the Bar on May 19, 2023.

Justice Viswanathan's disclosure reveals an extensive real estate portfolio - builder floors in Safdarjung Development Area and Gulmohar Park in Delhi, an apartment in Race Course Road, Coimbatore, and an inherited DDA flat. Notably, Justice Viswanathan has declared investments worth more than Rs 120 Crores and has paid a total of Rs 91.47 crore in income tax from 2010 to 2025.

Justice Pamidighantam Sri Narasimha was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court in 2008 and went on to serve as Additional Solicitor General of India in 2014. He was directly elevated to the Supreme Court from the Bar on August 31, 2021. His asset disclosure reveals investments amounting to Rs 35.49 Crores.
