
Centre Notifies Repatriation Of J&K High Court Judge To Madhya Pradesh High Court

The Ministry of Law and Justice has notified the transfer of Justice Atul Sreedharan from the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court back to his original posting at the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
This transfer, made under Article 222(1) of the Constitution of India, was carried out after consultation with the Chief Justice of India.
The official notification regarding the transfer was issued by the Ministry of Law & Justice, Department of Justice. The notification dated March 13, 2025 read, "In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 222 of the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to transfer Shri Justice Atul Sreedharan, Judge, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, as Judge of High Court of Madhya Pradesh and to direct him to assume charge of his office in the High Court of Madhya Pradesh."
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Justice Sreedharan’s return to his parent High Court in a meeting held on March 6, 2025. Justice Sreedharan had initially been transferred from the Madhya Pradesh High Court to the Jammu & Kashmir High Court in April 2023, after requesting the move due to his daughter beginning her legal career in Madhya Pradesh.
Justice Sreedharan, born on May 24, 1966, began his legal journey in 1992, working under the mentorship of Senior Advocate Gopal Subramanium in Delhi. He practiced independently in Delhi from 1997 to 2000, and in 2001, he moved to Indore, where he continued his legal practice at the Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Over the years, he represented both the State and Central government in various matters.
In April 2016, Justice Sreedharan was appointed as an additional judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, and he became a permanent judge of the same court on March 17, 2018. On April 27, 2023, he was transferred to the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, where he took the oath of office on May 10, 2023. Now, after nearly two years, Justice Sreedharan has been transferred back to his original posting at the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
