Centre Notifies Appointment Of Karnataka High Court Judge As Next Chief Justice Of Manipur High Court

The Ministry of Law and Justice has notified the appointment of Justice Kempaiah Somashekar of the Karnataka High Court as the new Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court.

The announcement was made through an official notification dated May 20, 2025 issued by the Central Government, following a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium dated May 15.

The notification stated, “In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Kempaiah Somashekar, Judge of the Karnataka High Court, to be Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”

Justice Somashekar will succeed the current Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, Justice D. Krishnakumar, who is scheduled to retire on May 21.

Justice Somashekar began his judicial career on June 17, 1998, when he was appointed as a District and Sessions Judge. After years of service in the judiciary, he was elevated to the position of an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court on November 14, 2016. Subsequently, he was confirmed as a permanent judge of the Karnataka High Court on November 3, 2018.
