The Ministry of Law and Justice has notified the appointment of Advocate Arun Kumar to be Judge of the Allahabad High Court.

Advocate Arun Kumar has been appointed as a judge of the Allahabad High Court, more than two years after his name was first recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium. In its Resolution dated May 09, 2023, the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended his name.

The recommendation came after it had earlier deferred making a decision due to inputs received from the Intelligence Bureau (IB). However, by May 2023, the Department of Justice informed the Collegium that the IB had not provided any new or additional inputs beyond what was already available. Upon review, the Collegium noted that three consultee judges had provided favourable opinions about Kumar’s suitability for elevation, and both the Chief Minister and the Governor of Uttar Pradesh had given their concurrence. Convinced of his credentials and integrity, the Collegium reiterated that Arun Kumar was “eminently fit and suitable” to be appointed as a judge.

The notification released on the Ministry’s website today read, “In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Arun Kumar, to be a Judge of the Allahabad High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”
