Centre Notifies Appointment Of Acting Chief Justice For Delhi High Court

The Ministry of Law and Justice has notified the appointment of Justice Vibhu Bakhru as the acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

He will assume the role following the elevation of Chief Justice Manmohan to the Supreme Court, a move that was cleared today.

Born in Nagpur in 1966, Justice Bakhru completed his schooling at Delhi Public School on Mathura Road, New Delhi. He pursued a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree from Delhi University, graduating in 1987, and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1989.

In 1990, Justice Bakhru obtained his LL.B degree and enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi. He developed a robust legal practice, representing clients before various judicial forums, including the Supreme Court, Delhi High Court, Company Law Board, and other tribunals.

In July 2011, he was designated as a Senior Advocate, a recognition of his legal expertise. Justice Bakhru's judicial career began when he was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court on April 17, 2013. He was subsequently made a permanent judge on March 18, 2015.

The notification dated December 03, 2024 read, “In exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Vibhu Balchru, Judge of the Delhi High Court, to perform the duties of office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from the date Shri Justice Manmohan, Chief Justice, Delhi High Court relinquishes charge of his office consequent upon his elevation as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.”
