
Centre Notifies Appointment Of 5 New Chief Justices, Transfer Of 4 To Various High Courts

The Ministry of Law and Justice has notified the appointment and transfer of several Chief Justices to various High Courts.
The Ministry notified these developments through its notifications dated July 14, 2025. These appointments were based on the recommendations put forward by the Supreme Court Collegium, which is currently headed by Chief Justice of India, Justice B.R. Gavai.
The 5 appointed Chief Justices are:
1. Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva (ACJ: Madhya Pradesh HC) has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
2. Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan (Himachal Pradesh HC) will now serve as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.
3. Justice Vibhu Bakhru (Delhi HC) has been named the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.
4. Justice Ashutosh Kumar (ACJ: Patna HC) is set to take over as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.
5. Justice Vipul Manubhai Pancholi (Patna HC) has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.
The Supreme Court Collegium in its meeting dated May 26, 2025 had resolved to recommend the transfer of four Chief Justices of various High Courts to different High Courts.
The 4 Chief Justices who have been transferred are:
1. Justice K.R. Shriram, who currently serves as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, has been transferred to take over as the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.
2. Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, the incumbent Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court, has been transferred to the Madras High Court, where he will assume duties as the new Chief Justice.
3. Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao, who is presently the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court, has been transferred to head the Tripura High Court.
4. Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, the current Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court, has been transferred to the Telangana High Court, where he will serve as the Chief Justice.
