Centre Clears 3 Out Of 5 Names Recommended By Collegium As Judges Of Calcutta & Patna High Court

The Ministry of Law and Justice notified the appointment of three advocates as additional judges to the Calcutta High Court. The notification was released on the Ministry’s website on March 08, 2025.

The appointed advocates are:

1. Smita Das De

2. Reetobroto Kumar Mitra

3. Om Narayan Rai

These three were part of five advocates recommended by the Supreme Court collegium on February 28 for elevation to the bench.

However, two other recommended advocates, Md Talay Masood Siddiqui and Krishnaraj Thaker, have not yet received clearance for their appointment.

In another notification the Ministry has notified the appointment of three advocates of Patna High Court as Judges of the respective court.

The advocates appointed as Judges are:

1. Alok Kumar Sinha,

2. Sourendra Pandey and

3. Soni Shrivastava

The Supreme Collegium had recommended the name of five advocates including these to be judges of Patna High Court however two other recommended advocates, Ritesh Kumar and Ansul @ Anshul Raj, have yet not received clearance.

The notification dated March 07, 2025 read, “In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint S/Shri (i) Alok Kumar Sinha, (ii) Sourendra Pandey and (iii) Smt. Soni Shrivastava to be Judges Of the Patna High Court, in that order of seniority, with effect from the date they assume. charge of their respective offices.”
