The Ministry of Law & Justice has notified the elevation of four Chief Justices and one senior advocate to be appointed as judges of the Supreme Court.

The Law Minister, Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, announced this development on X today. The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended their elevation in a meeting held on May 22 and 27.

The list of names that are elevated as the judges of the Supreme Court is: 

1. Justice Sheel Nagu, presently Chief Justice of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana, with parent High Court being the High Court of Madhya Pradesh.

2. Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, presently Chief Justice of the High Court of Bombay, with parent High Court being the High Court of Jharkhand.

3. Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, presently Chief Justice of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh, with parent High Court being the High Court of Delhi.

4. Justice Arun Palli, presently Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, with parent High Court being the High Court of Punjab and Haryana.

The tweet read, "In exercise of the power conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President of India, after consultation with Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint the following as Judges of the Supreme Court of India. I convey my best wishes to them:-"

The appointments were made just days after the government issued an ordinance increasing the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court from 34 to 38 judges. With these five new appointments, 37 of the 38 positions in the apex court are now occupied.
