The Madras High Court Bar Association has written a representation to the Chief Justice of India, the Prime Minister and the Ministry of External Affairs, for urgent intervention in tracing and rescuing Justice V. Sivagnanam, Former Judge of the Madras High Court.

Justice Sivagnanam has reportedly been missing and untraceable in Nepal since August 26 2026, following the catastrophic floods in the Nepal–Tibet border region.

As per the reports, the unprecedented floods have resulted in a large number of deaths and missing persons, including Indian nationals. Search and rescue operations remain extremely challenging because of landslides, debris, damaged roads and disrupted communications.

The Association, in its letter, has said, "The Hon’ble Mr.Justice V. Sivagnanam rendered about 34 years of service in the Indian Judiciary, Former Judge of Madras High Court and since from July 2025 he was designated as Senior Advocates by the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India. While he was travelling in Nepal as part of a group of Tamil pilgrims when the disaster struck."


It has been requested to coordinate directly with the Government of Nepal, Nepal Police, local rescue agencies and disaster-response teams to ascertain his whereabouts. Further, to check hospitals, rescue camps, shelters, evacuation centres, identification centres and other locations where rescued or unidentified persons may have been taken.

The Letter has also sought some action to deploy or utilise Indian search-and-rescue, forensic and technical resources wherever appropriate and in coordination with Nepalese authorities.

Recently, it has also been reported that the Delhi Tamil Advocates Association has requested the Union and the Chief Justice of India to take immediate action for a search and rescue operation for Justice Sivagnanam.
