Update: 2022-12-27 04:37 GMT

While speaking at the 16th National Conference of Akhil Bharatiya Adhivaktha Parishad, Union Law & Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju said yesterday that a proposal pending before him, if approved, will be the largest project in history for the judiciary, involving many thousand crores.

He said that the proposal before him is being finalized between the E-Committee of the Supreme Court and the Justice Department. He also said that Prime Minister Modi has executed many big projects to strengthen the judiciary.

The Minister was speaking on the subject, "New Challenges and Opportunities before the Indian Judicial System".

He also spoke about using Indin languages in courts. He said that arguments in courts must be in Indian languages and that people seeking justice should understand what is happening in courts.

He said that we should end the 'British thought'. He added that British laws are being repealed. He said that we should import our ancient Vedic thought and Indianize the judiciary.

He said that the drafting of laws must be simplified. He urged Akhil Bharatiya Adhivaktha Parishad, the organiser of the event, to promote free legal aid and pro bono litigation.

The Law Minister had also said that judges will have to face public scrutiny even though they are unelected.

"Today we (legislators) can be questioned, saying that we (people) elected you. But judges are not elected. So no one can question them. Hence I said during an event in the presence of the Chief Justice and other judges that we have to go to the citizens every five years and our work is scrutinized by the citizens. But judges are not elected and are appointed by the system in place. Hence, though the public will not vote for judges, judges will face scrutiny in public opinion. Now there is social media, it is fully open. Who can shut it down?", the Minister had said (read report).

The Minister was speaking at the 16th National Conference of Akhil Bharatiya Adhivaktha Parishad at Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, Haryana. The event from 26 to 28 December with the theme of 75 years of Resurgent Bharat-Changing Contours of Law and Justice will see the participation of around 4000 Lawyers from more than 500 districts across India.
