Singapore's Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon Sits On CJI's Bench As Supreme Court Prepares To Celebrate Its Foundation Day

The Court of the Chief Justice of India today witnessed the presence of Chief Justice of Singapore, Justice Sundaresh Menon on the dais along with Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha.

Justice Sundaresh Menon sat at some distance from the two Judges on the podium and was perusing files of the cases that were being heard by the Bench of the CJI.

It's my honour and pleasure to invite Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon. He will be delivering the first annual lecture at the Supreme Court tomorrow on its Foundation Day”, said Chief Justice DY Chandrachud.

Welcoming Chief Justice of Singapore, President of the Supreme Court Bar Association Senior Advocate Vikas Singh said, ”It is a pleasure to welcome a Chief Justice of a foreign country but who is of Indian origin”.

Thank you very much”, replied Justice Menon. The Chief Justice of Singapore, Justice Sundaresh Menon, has been invited as the Chief Guest for the celebration of Foundation Day at the Supreme Court and he will be delivering a lecture on the Role of Judiciary in a Changing World.

Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on 6 November 2012. He is the first Singapore-born Chief Justice of the Country.

Chief Justice Menon graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) from the National University of Singapore in 1986 and a Master of Laws from Harvard Law School in 1991. He was admitted as an advocate and solicitor in Singapore in 1987, and as an attorney and counsellor-at-law in New York in 1992, as per the website of the Singapore government.

The Supreme Court of India, for the first time, is set to celebrate its Foundation Day on February 4, 2023.

The Foundation Day, is to commemorate the 73rd anniversary of the establishment of the Supreme Court of India, will feature a welcome address by Justice SK Kaul and an address by CJI DY Chandrachud as well.

The Supreme Court came into existence on January 28, 1950, two days after India became a republic on January 26, 1950.

After its inauguration on January 28, 1950, the Supreme Court commenced its sittings in a part of the Parliament House. The Court moved into the present building, which is located on Tilak Marg, New Delhi in 1958.

The original Constitution of 1950 envisaged a Supreme Court with a Chief Justice and 7 puisne Judges - leaving it to Parliament to increase this number. In the early years, all the Judges of the Supreme Court sat together to hear the cases presented before them.

The Supreme Court of India comprises the Chief Justice and a sanctioned strength of 33 other Judges appointed by the President of India. Supreme Court Judges retire upon attaining the age of 65 years.
