Centre Notifies Elevation Of Calcutta High Court Judge To Supreme Court

Update: 2025-03-10 08:00 GMT

The Ministry of Law and Justice notified the appointment of Justice Joymalya Bagchi of the Calcutta High Court as a judge of the Supreme Court of India.

Justice Bagchi’s name was recommended for elevation by the Supreme Court Collegium on March 6, 2025.

Justice Bagchi began his judicial career at the Calcutta High Court, where he was appointed as a judge on June 27, 2011. He was later transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court on January 4, 2021, and subsequently repatriated back to the Calcutta High Court on November 8, 2021, where he has been serving ever since.

Having served as a High Court judge for over 13 years, Justice Bagchi will now join the Supreme Court, where he is expected to have a significant tenure of over six years. He is projected to become the Chief Justice of India (CJI) in May 2031, upon the retirement of Justice KV Viswanathan. However, his tenure as CJI will be relatively short, as he will retire in October 2031.

Justice Bagchi’s appointment is particularly significant because he will be the first CJI from Calcutta since the late CJI Altamas Kabir, who retired in 2013.

The notification published on Ministry’s website dated March 10, 2025 read, “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Joymalya Bagchi, Judge of the Calcutta High Court, to be a Judge of the Supreme Court of India with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”
