The University Grants Commission, South Western Regional Office at Bangalore has issued a notice to the Principal of Sree Kerala Verma College calling upon the college to clarify its stand on a complaint regarding plagiarism by its Assistant Professor Deepa Nishant. Deepa Nishant is also a prominent left-leaning social media activist who had come to the limelight in 2015 for her Facebook post supporting student of the college who conducted beef-fest inside the campus. The Sree Kerala College located in Thrissur district of Kerala is administered by the Cochin Devaswom Board. The college had not taken any action till now against Deepa, despite several complaints.
November last year, Deepa Nishant had published a poem along with her photograph in a journal of the left-leaning ‘All Kerala Private College Teachers’ Association’ (AKPCTA). The poem turned out to be plagiarized from the work of a young poet S. Kalesh, that had already been published by him in his blog and in a book. Though initially, Deepa Nishant denied that her work is plagiarized, later she apologized, claiming that the poem was sent to her by a friend.
The complaint was filed before the UGC by Suku C R, a resident of Thrissur district, seeking that Deepa Nishant be not permitted to continue teaching in the college. The UGC has now asked the college whether any independent enquiry has been conducted by the college or the Calicut University against the Assistant Professor and has sought an early reply.
