Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Delhi issued non bailable warrants on Tuesday against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and former AAP leader Yogendra Yadav since they failed to appear in a criminal defamation case filed by Advocate Surender Kumar Sharma in 2013.
Mr. Sharma had alleged in the private complaint that a press release containing defamatory remarks about him was released by the accused, which was published in newspapers. Mr. Sharma had prepared to contest the 2013 Delhi Assembly Election after allegedly being promised a ticket by APP leaders. However, according to him, the ticket was later denied to him and defamatory remarks against him were published by the accused.
After receipt of the summons, Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia had approached the Delhi High Court seeking to quash the proceedings, which was refused by the High Court. Later, the case remained stayed on account of the pendency of the challenge to the constitutionality of criminal defamation laws by Dr. Subramanian Swamy and others.
The trio was on bail when they failed to appear before the trial court on Tuesday.
